Welcome to LBDtools.com
A toolbox of information and ideas for Responsive Care Partnering, skills that help family and professional caregivers deal with Lewy body dementia (LBD), with or without Parkinson's, Alzheimer's or other dementia's.
Robin Williams died with un-diagnosed Lewy body dementia. His early symptoms were either disregarded or diagnosed as Parkinson's, not at all unusual. Dementia expert, Dr. James Galvin, calls LBD, "the most common dementia you've never heard of."
Dementia isn't easy for anyone to deal with and LBD is harder than most. Early behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are common, as is a sensitivity to the very drugs normally used to treat them. Dementia specialists recommend that non-drug options should always be tried first for BPSD.This is especially true with LBD, but caregivers can make their job easier with what we call Responsive Care Partnering.
Responsive Care Partnering starts with educating yourself about the disorder and especially about the drugs that may be problematic. It also includes knowing about your loved one's unique likes, dislikes, triggers and needs.
As you become more aware of LBD and its issues with BPSD drugs, other options for care become important. "Non-drug options" covers a multitude of therapies and care. Integrative medicine, or the use of a combination of traditional medicine and alternative therapies, tends to increase quality of life while decreasing the need for drugs. So does the use of other non-drug options.
